The Internet is one AWESOME tool! With one click of a button, you are off exploring ancient ruins, the Eiffel Tower, or King Tuts’ tomb. You can purchase a movie, listen to your favorite tunes and be swayed to meet someone you have NEVER met before. What did we just say? Go back and read that again…..

Yes, it is true. There are people “out there” in cyber land that are not like you and your friends. They prey on young, naïve people to steal their identity, money and sometimes their lives.

"Chat" is probably the MOST dangerous area on the Internet because you do not know who is there.

Joe, the 15 year old boy from across town, could be a 46 year old convicted child molester.

It can take a predator less than 3 minutes to figure out where you live based on the information you provide in the computer.

  • Keep your identity private.
  • Never get together with someone you met online.
  • Never respond to an email, chat comments, instant messages or other messages that are hostile, belligerent and inappropriate or make you feel uncomfortable.
  • Be leery of someone who wants to know too much information.
  • If you are planning to meet someone, take a buddy with you. Yes, we taught you about the buddy system back in kindergarten and we are telling you about it NOW! The system does work!
  • Tell someone you love and trust about your feelings before confiding in someone you do not know.
  • Delete any mail, files, or pictures that are sketchy or leave you feeling uneasy. Trust your instincts.
  • Be careful with online fighting….If you want to find trouble on the internet….. You’ll find it! Situations can and will get out of control. JUST DON’T DO IT!

Below are tips to keep in mind when you are on the Internet or in “ Cyber Land”:

  • Check with parents first before giving out any personal information.
  • Only respond to emails or IM’S from people you know.
  • Show your parents or teachers immediately if you receive emails that make you feel uneasy or uncomfortable. (Trust your feelings).
  • Check with you parents BEFORE meeting anyone you just met online.

You are growing and maturing so fast that before you know it, you will be planning for prom and senior pictures. You are beginning a whole new chapter in life that is going to be filled with excitement, wonder, sadness and everlasting friendships. Be smart, make good choices and communicate with people who love you and only want the very best for you. Good Luck!
